SWAGG REPORT: Toronto’s Very Own Drake Gets Nominated 2 Times At The 2010 Grammy Awards.

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Toronto Rapper / Actor  Drake was nominated for best rap song and best rap solo performance for the hit single Best I Ever Had . It’s a great achievement for the 23-year-old rapper, who became an affiliate under the Young Money label last year of rapping phenom Lil Wayne. Drake’s first full album is due out next year.

No album out, strictly mixtapes and features, now he is at the 2010 Grammy Awards.

After his nomination was announced at a Grammy concert in Los Angeles Wednesday night, host LL Cool J asked Drake, who was in the audience, how he felt.

“I have to say, you know, it’s definitely an honour. I haven’t even put out my first album,” he said. “Being a kid from Toronto, I’m just proud, man. I know my mom’s at home, buggin’ out. I’m just glad to be here.”

He’s in tough company, however, up against artists such as Jay-Z, Eminem, Mos Def, T.I., Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and Kanye West in the categories.

SWAGG REPORT: Japanese Monks Use Hip-Hop To Recruit New Members.

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

A group of Monks in Japan are using Hip-Hop music to attract new followers to the Buddhist religion.

The Buddhist monks refer to their style of teaching as Buddhism 2010 in an article on CNN.

The new style of monks have dropped traditional Buddhist chants and have incorporated rap and Hip-Hop as a way to introduce new people to the faith.

“Getting the young people back to religion is key to Buddhism’s survival,” Kansho “Mr. Happiness” Tagai told CNN. “In Japan, it’s a religion in crisis.”

The monks are also putting a spin on traditional Buddhist temples to attract young people, by serving alcohol while they teach.

They reason that their followers talk at ease in a bar like setting, as opposed to the traditional temple, because they are disconnected with modern times.

According to Tagai, Monks’ new recruiting technique are paying off.

“Twice as many people, especially the young, are now visiting the temple,” Tagai said. “Other monks are even calling me up for advice.”
